Yoenis Cespedes Not Ready to Return from DL

Yoenis Cespedes was eligible to rejoin the Oakland Athletics yesterday after spending 15 days on the team’s disabled list.  Unfortunately for Cespedes and the A’s, the Cuban slugger isn’t ready and Jane Lee of MLB.com reports that there is no timetable for his return.

Cespedes was cleared to resume all baseball related activities other than swinging a bat last week.  While this put him on a road to likely rejoin the A’s when he became eligible yesterday, Cespedes has still not been able to resume swinging a bat as he continues to be impacted by his strained left hand.

A’s manager Bob Melvin told reporters that Cespedes will not return for their current series against the Los Angeles Angels.  Beyond that, Melvin said the team will have to “just see” as the A’s medical staff determines when Cespedes is able to resume swinging a bat.  Once he is able to do so, Melvin believes the A’s will be able to determine a timeframe for Cespedes’s return.

The A’s already light-hitting lineup can ill afford the absence of Cespedes, who was one of the team’s few power sources.  It appears that the earliest Cespedes will be able to rejoin the A’s is this Friday, but it all depends on when the slugger’s hand allows him to start taking swings once again.
