John Danks has been placed on the Chicago White Sox 15-day disabled list due to a sore shoulder. The White Sox do not believe Danks’s injury to be serious and are expecting the left-hander to return when eligible on June 4. Chicago has recalled Jose Quintana to take Danks’s spot in their rotation.
Danks said he began to experience soreness in his shoulder during his last start against the Chicago Cubs. Still, Danks and manager Robin Ventura don’t believe the injury is serious and the White Sox are confident the 27-year-old will return to their rotation following his 15-day stint on the DL. Ventura also said that he doesn’t expect Danks to require any innings in the minors before rejoining the White Sox.
Danks has not gotten off to the start he or the White Sox expected. After inking his five-year, $65 million extension this offseason, Danks has come out of the gate with a 5.70 ERA and 1.491 WHIP over his first nine starts. Danks has watched his strikeout rate (5.0 SO/9) drop while his BB/9 has increased to 3.9, up nearly 1 from his career norm of 3.0.
Quintana made his debut with the White Sox earlier this season, logging 5 2/3 innings of scoreless, one-hit work. The 23-year-old has spent the season with the White Sox Double-A affiliate, posting an ERA and WHIP of 2.77 and 1.171 over his nine starts. Over his six seasons in the minors, Quintana has maintained an ERA and WHIP of 2.76 and 1.167 with 10.0 SO/9 and 3.9 BB/9.
