Chicago White Sox Notes: Philip Humber to the Bullpen?
Philip Humber tossed a perfect game in April, but he’s struggled since. So far this season, Humber is 2-4 with a 5.92 ERA. Yesterday Humber lasted 5 1/3 innings, but gave up six runs. According to Toni Ginnetti of the Chicago Sun Times, Humber must pitch better or he may be heading to the bullpen. Manager Robin Ventura suggested after the game that Humber’s struggles need to be correct somehow.
‘‘He has to [keep pitching],’’ Ventura said. ‘‘It’s hard to work your way out of it if you don’t pitch. Whether that’s starting or the bullpen, I don’t know. But it has to get better.’’
The White Sox are still leading in the American League Central, but not by much. After losing two of three to the Houston Astros, the White Sox hold just a half game lead over the Cleveland Indians. In the three games against Houston, the White Sox scored 22 runs. However, their pitching allowed 20. Despite this, Chicago is still the only team in the American League Central with a positive run differential.
Back on April 21st, Humber pitched the 21st perfect game in Major League history. Despite his performance and his name forever etched in the history books, Humber has not been able to ride that success through the rest of the season. In fact, Humber has found limited success in his career.
Seven years ago, Humber underwent Tommy John surgery. His career was delayed because of the injury, but he worked his way back and made his Major League debut on September 24, 2006. He is 7-7 in his career with a 4.44 ERA. Last season was his first as a full time starter. Prior to last season, Humber had never started more than one game in a season.
Ginnetti reports that Humber will remain in the rotation for now according to Ventura, but how long that lasts is anyone’s guess. ‘‘He’s still going to make that next start [Saturday against the Dodgers in Los Angeles],’’ Ventura said.
