MLB Rumors: Livan Hernandez To Join Milwaukee Brewers
According to a tweet from Scott Miller of CBS Sports, Livan Hernandez will join the Brewers. Former-Brewer Bill Hall saw him in the Chicago airport and reported back that Hernandez was on his way to join Milwaukee.
This is the only confirmation of the rumor, and it could ultimately come to pass without Hernandez joining the
club. Hernandez was released by the Atlanta Braves on June 15th, but it seemed Hernandez would land somewhere. That somewhere could very well be the Brewers.
Milwaukee ranks 22nd in team ERA at 4.25. While Hernandez may not be able to help in that department (his career ERA is 0.15 higher than the current team ERA), he finds ways to win. In his career, Hernandez has won 175 games against 177 losses. He has pitched in 17 major League seasons.
Despite the high career ERA, Hernandez was second in Rookie of the Year voting in 1997 and is a two-time All-Star. He’s played for eight different teams, and Milwaukee would be his ninth. At 37 years old, he may not have much left in the tank, but he could help bolster the Brewers rotation for a little over half a season.
Should the Brewers sign Hernandez and add him to the roster, it’s unclear if this indicates they will not be sellers at the trade deadline. That’s been the big question for the team so far this summer. Are they buyers or sellers? They are five games under .500 and 6.5 games back of first place. They could make a run and sneak into the play-offs for a second year in a row, but it seems unlikely. The Reds are improved, the Cardinals are still a threat, and the Pirates are once again over .500 this summer.
Prior to being released by the Reds, Hernandez struggled. He was 1-1 in eight games with a 4.94 ERA. He didn’t start any of those eight games.
