Will Middlebrooks Breaks Right Wrist
The young, talented third baseman that all but forced Bobby Valentine and the Red Sox front office to part
ways with Kevin Youkilis is heading for the disabled list. Will Middlebrooks was hit by a pitch yesterday and has broken his right wrist.
The pitch was a 95 mph offering that ran in and nailed Middlebrooks on the wrist. It looked bad when it happened, and now the Boston Herald confirms it is bad.
“He got hit pretty good in a bad place,” Valentine said. “I doubt that he’s in there (Saturday), and I hope it’s only a day. Doubtful of that. He was in a lot of pain and it was in a bad spot. I was hoping it was going to be more down on the meat, and it was just straight on the bone.”
The Red Sox will call up Danny Valencia from Triple-A to fill the roster spot. Middlebrooks was hitting .288/.325/.509 with 15 home runs. It’s not clear how long he will be out, but with just under two months left in the seasons and the Red Sox postseason hopes fading, this may be a season-ending injury for Middlebrooks.
