Jered Weaver to Miss Tigers Series

The Los Angeles Angels have been rolling as of late, but Cy Young candidate Jered Weaver is ailing.

Weaver took a line drive off his right shoulder during his last start versus the Mariners. While the original diagnosis was a bruise, Weaver still hasn’t been able to throw since that outing. Originally, manager Mike Scioscia had planned to give Weaver an extra day of rest before starting him opposite Justin Verlander when the Tigers come to tow this weekend. Instead of throwing a side session on Wednesday, however, Weaver was sent back to Los Angeles to visit Dr. Lewis Yocum.

The Angels have gotten much better work from their starters as of late, but they need strong starters to protect a bullpen that has been one of the league’s worst. Weaver is the type of hurler that can not only pitch effectively through a start, but eat innings in the process. Losing him for any significant length of time will severely dampen the chances of the Angels to reach the post-season.
