Inflammation to Cut Short Profar’s Winter League Season

Texas Rangers infielder Jurickson Profar’s season in the Dominican Winter League will be cut short, according to a report passed along by Richard Durrett of ESPNDallas.com, as the teenage is suffering from some mild inflammation in his right forearm. He was shut down purely as a precaution by the team. Durrett reports that Profar will head to Texas this week in order to be evaluated by team physicians.

He’d already appeared in 15 games for Licey, going 6 for 38.

Profar is widely viewed as one of the top position player prospects in all of baseball and had an extraordinarily memorable MLB Debut this past September, becoming the youngest player in American League history to hit a home run in his first at bat. The switch hitter would hit .176/.176/.471 (3 for 17) in 9 games before the season concluded, but is expected to play an as yet undetermined role with the Rangers this coming season. It is likely he’ll see time at either shortstop or second base, though the final decision may not be made for some time and will largely depend on what other moves the organization chooses to make this winter. Profar’s name has and will continue to come up, particularly with this week’s Winter Meetings upon us, but the chances that he is dealt remain slim. It would take an incredible offer for the Rangers to move him at this point in time.
