Canzler Claimed Again, This Time by Yankees

Russ Canzler has had a busy winter, to say the least. The first baseman/designated hitter first was claimed off of waivers by the Toronto Blue Jays in mid-December, shortly after the Indians designated him for assignment in order to make room for free agent acquisition Mark Reynolds. Cleveland re-claimed him earlier this week, which was followed by word that the Indians were hopeful he’d be able to compete in Spring Training for a spot on the roster, potentially in the mix at DH. He’s on the move once again, however, having been claimed by the New York Yankees this time around after the Indians needed space on their 40-man roster for newly signed right-hander Brett Myers.

Canzler, 26, hit .269/.299/.398 this past season in limited duty (97 PA, 26 G) with the Indians. He should offer some added depth at the four corners (1B, 3B, RF, LF) in New York – presuming he sticks on the team’s 40-man roster long enough to come to Spring Training.

The Yankees designated outfielder Chris Dickerson for assignment to make room for the addition of Canzler.
