In late October the Toronto Blue Jays lost right-hander Chad Beck to the Pittsburgh Pirates via waivers. Pittsburgh designated Beck for assignment on December 26th, following the completion of their trade with the Boston Red Sox for closer Joel Hanrahan, and the soon-to-be 28 year old was re-claimed by the Blue Jays yesterday.
Beck spent the bulk of the 2012 season with Toronto’s Triple-A affiliate, posting solid numbers. He made 43 appearances, pitching a total of 48.0 innings, with a 2-0 record, 1.31 ERA, and 1.083 WHIP on the year with Las Vegas, adding 18 saves. While not a big strikeout pitcher throughout his career (just 7.3 K/9 over seven minor league seasons), Beck also doesn’t walk many batters (career 2.4 BB/9). He also had a brief stint with the Blue Jays this past year, making 14 appearances (with a 6.32 ERA over 15.2 innings).
The former 14th Round draft pick (2006, Arizona Diamondbacks) had originally been acquired by the Blue Jays in an August 2008 trade that shipped David Eckstein to Arizona.
