Jeremy Bonderman has been called up by the Seattle Mariners and will start for the team on Sunday, according to Greg Johns of MLB.com. The start will mark Bonderman’s first appearance in the Major Leagues since October 2010. It’s unclear how long a leash the team will give Bonderman as he re-aclimates himself to Major League hitters, but he’ll be given the first opportunity to replace Brandon Maurer in the rotation after the right-hander was optioned to Triple-A this week.
Bonderman has made 11 starts for Seattle’s Triple-A affiliate, going 2-4 with a 4.52 ERA and 1.492 WHIP over 63.2 IP. He joined the Mariners on a minor league deal in Spring Training and came close to winning a spot in the team’s Opening Day rotation. Bonderman underwent Tommy John Surgery early in 2012 after sitting out the entire 2011 season.
The 30 year old Bonderman spent eight years in the Major Leagues with the Detroit Tigers, making 193 starts and throwing 1,176.0 IP. He’d post a 67-77 mark overall with a 4.89 ERA and 1.402 WHIP.
