For all the dingers and RBIs the California League features, this past week in High-A baseball has seen some exceptional pitching.
The Visalia Rawhide’s Andrew Barbosa threw six innings of shutout ball against the Stockton Ports on Jul. 23.
Barbosa went six innings, giving up only one hit, allowing three walks, and striking out 10. No runs were given up. The bullpen went on to give up five runs between the 7th and 9th innings to bring the game into extra innings.
In the 11th inning, Tom Belza hit a two-out double to drive in Evan Marzilli. The Rawhide went on to win 6-5.
Michael Ynoa holds his own against big league rehabber
On Jul. 26, as the San Francisco Giants’ Ryan Vogelsong made a rehab start with the team’s High-A affiliate, Michael Ynoa made the start for the Stockton Ports and had a no-hitter going for a good while.
Ynoa out-dueled Vogelsong, though that wouldn’t seem to be a problem because of Vogelsong’s pitch limit. So while Vogelsong went 2.2 innings, Ynoa was able to take it a bit further: 5.1 innings of shutout baseball, giving up only one hit, allowing three walks, striking out six.
The first and only hit during Ynoa’s outing came in the 6th inning, when San Jose’s Mac Williamson hit a one-out single.
The Stockton Ports went on to win, 4-2.
Reds farmhand ends his losing streak
Bakersfield Blaze righty Jon Moscot‘s last win came on May 17 against the Stockton Ports. He went 12 starts with either a loss or a no-decision. His longest outing during that span was 6.1 innings.
On Jul. 27, the Blaze went down to Lake Elsinore to face the Storm. Moscot pitched the best game of the season, with a game score of 82. He went eight innings — the longest game he’s pitched all year. He only allowed three hits and struck out six, allowing zero walks.
The Blaze offense was able to back up Moscot’s performance on the mound with an offensive explosion, scoring 10 runs on 14 hits. They won the game, 10-0.
