Jake Barrett Slams the Door for Mobile

The Mobile BayBears are one game away from going to their third consecutive Southern League championship round.  They can thank Jake Barrett for being a sea of calm in a wild game as Mobile held on to win 7-6 (after blowing an early 4-0 lead) and take a two games to one lead over the Mississippi Braves in their best-of-five series.

Trailing 5-4 heading into the top of the eighth inning, the Bears erupted for three runs highlighted by a two run double by catcher Raywilly Gomez to take a 7-5 lead.  In the bottom of the frame, the Braves made the score 7-6 and had runners on first and third with one out when Barrett entered the game.  He got Mycal Jones to ground to shortstop Nick Ahmed who threw to Gomez to cut down Mississippi’s Jamie Pedroza at the plate.  Barrett then retired Christian Bethancourt on a ground ball to second.  In the ninth, Barrett surrendered a two out single to Barrett Kleinknecht but then struck out Robby Hefflinger to end the game.

Game Four will take place in Mobile Sunday at 6:05 PM.  The winner of this series will take on the winner of the Birmingham-Tennessee series for the Southern League Championship which begins on Tuesday, September 10th.
