Division rivals will square off against one another in one of the National League’s Division Series matchups, as the Pittsburgh Pirates will head to St. Louis to take on the Cardinals. The Cardinals held the best record in the National League with a 98-64 mark, winning the NL Central by 3.0 games. Once again they’ll head into the postseason as one of the favorites.
Pittsburgh’s story is clear at this point. Twenty-one years of futility before the team finally made their way into the playoffs, brushing past the Cincinnati Reds with relative ease in Monday night’s Wild Card Game. The Pirates are the big story of the playoffs right now, with plenty jumping on their bandwagon in support of their long-suffering faithful.
The two teams were evenly matched in 19 games this season. Pittsburgh won 10 to the Cardinals’ 9, including going 6-3 in St. Louis. The Cardinals outscored the Pirates during the season, 87-85.
