St. Louis wasted no time getting ahead of their division rivals, winning Game 1 of their NL Division Series by an easy 9-1 final score. Adam Wainwright pitched masterfully for the Cardinals, allowing just 1 ER in 7.0 IP (3 H, 0 BB, 9 SO). The Cardinal offense jumped on Pittsburgh starter A.J. Burnett quickly, scoring 7 runs before knocking him from the game in the 3rd inning. Matt Holliday and David Freese each had a pair of hits, with Carlos Beltran adding a three-run home run of his own that’d chase Burnett from the game.
Game 2 promises to deliver another hard-fought battle between the two sides.

Today’s pitching matchup features a pair of pitchers who aren’t far apart in age, but have taken very different paths towards starting in this game. St. Louis will look to take a commanding lead in the series behind Lance Lynn, who went 15-10 with a 3.87 ERA during the regular season but was outstanding at home, going 9-3 with a 2.82 ERA. Lynn, 26, is completing his third year in the Major Leagues and will be pitching in his third postseason. Gerrit Cole will take the mound opposing him, following an abbreviated rookie campaign that opened plenty of eyes. Cole debuted in June with the Pirates, going 11-7 with a 3.22 ERA over 19 starts.
