In one of the lower scoring games thus far in the AFL, the Peoria Javelinas beat the Scottsdale Scorpions 6-3 on Thursday. The Javelinas recovered from a rough start by Johnny Barbato that saw him walk four of the six batters he faced. While Angel Baez gave up two runs of his own (after stranding all three of Crick’s), he also struck out five batters and just walked one in his three innings of work. The next four pitchers for Peoria combined for five and a third innings of scoreless ball, allowing just one hit. Despite getting only seven hits of their own, the Javelinas scored six runs with two hits apiece from Delino DeShields, Nolan Fontana and Cory Spangenberg. Scottsdale starter Kyle Crick got roughed up early, allowing four runs (three earned) on three hits and three walks in just two innings of work. The hitters struggled to their three runs off of just five hits including a pair from center fielder Mason Williams.

Game 2
The Glendale Desert Dogs notched the first shutout of the AFL by limiting the Surprise Saguaros to just three hits in an 11-0 victory. Despite walking four, Glendale starter Stephen McCray kicked off the day of outstanding pitching while five pitchers, including Charlie Leesman (one and a third innings) and Kevin Vance (two innings), followed. L.A. Dodgers prospect, left fielder Brian Cavazos-Galvez led the offense, going five for five with two doubles, two runs scored and an RBI. Catcher Tucker Barnhart, right fielder Yorman Rodriguez, third baseman Colin Moran and second baseman Micah Johnson each had apari of hits with Johnson driving in three and Rodriguez hitting a double and home run. There wasn’t much to report on the hitting side for Surprise and the pitchers, for the most part, were picked apart quite methodically. Only starter Will Roberts (three innings, one run) and finisher Jason Gurka (one inning, no runs) gave up fewer runs than innings pitched.
