October 11 Arizona Fall League Report
Game 1
The Peoria Javelinas took a close game 5-3 over the Salt River Rafters thanks to good pitching and timely hitting. While Peoria starter Brandon Maurer wasn’t good (two runs on three hits and two walks in just one and two-thirds innings), the rest of the pitching staff was very good and the final two pitchers, Jonas Dufek and Ken Giles each struck out the side in their innings. The batters rapped out twelve hits, scoring five runs including two on a home run by Jonathan Meyer. Chris Taylor, Orlando Calixte and Delino DeShields each had a pair of hits while Austin Hedges had two hits (including a double) and drove in two runs. For the Rafters, Sam Gaviglio started and gave up three runs on six hits and a walk in four innings but Toronto’s Marcus Stroman gave up the go-ahead run in the eighth on two hits. Stroman’s teammate from the Double-A New Hampshire Fisher Cats, Kenny Wilson, played an excellent center field and just missed a full house with a pair of hits and a pair of walks. Austin Hedges caught Wilson on the bases twice including a pickoff from first base. Colorado’s Tim Wheeler had three hits and drove in a run for Salt River.
