Buxton Goes Deep: October 14 Arizona Fall League Report

Apologies for the late report. Yesterday was Canadian Thanksgiving and I was out at a lovely dinner with friends for turkey-coma-inducing goodness.

Game 1

The Glendale Desert Dogs, buoyed by excellent pitching and Byron Buxton‘s first Arizona home run, defeated the Peoria Javelinas 5-1. Buxton went two for four with two RBI and Micah Johnson, Yorman Rodriguez and Max Kepler each had a pair of hits. Alex Meyer started for the Desert Dogs and threw two perfect innings with three strikeouts. Peoria starter Kyle Hunter gave up two runs over three innings but it’s amazing that he didn’t get lit up for more, surrendering eight hits and a walk. Peoria only got six hits off of the Glendale staff and no one player had more than one hit although Jorge Bonifacio and Austin Hedges each hit a double.

Taylor Lindsey, from the Angels organization, hit the game’s only home run. The New York Yankees’ Vidal Nuno had a mixed start, going two and two-thirds innings and giving up four runs on five hits although two of those runs were unearned and he struck out five. His teammates didn’t help him out in the field, making six errors including two each by shortstop Alen Hanson and third baseman Aderlin Rodriguez. Game 3

The Salt River Rafters overcame making three errors and took a narrow victory 3-2 over the Surprise Saguaros on Monday. Four Toronto Blue Jays farmhands played a role in this win with righty Drew Hutchison getting the start and pitching two and two-thirds innings of ball despite getting touched for two unearned runs. Righty John Stilson impressed with 95 mph heat in shutting down Surprise in the ninth with two strikeouts. Center fielder Kenny Wilson continues to torch AFL pitching with another three hits and two stolen bases while catcher Derrick Chung had a much better second game (not having played above High-A ball before), going one for three with a walk and catching a runner stealing. Dean Kiekhefer also struck out two in his inning of work and Stephen Piscotty had an outstanding four-for-four game with an RBI. For Surprise, Milwaukee’s Taylor Jungmann had an outstanding start, giving up just two hits and a walk in three innings while striking out four. Tim Berry also struck out three over two scoreless innings. Garin Cecchini had a pair of hits and Travis Shaw drove in the club’s two runs.
