October 25 Arizona Fall League Report

Game 1

The Mesa Solar Sox won a see-saw battle with the Peoria Javelinas with two-run innings in the eighth and ninth to win the game. Cubs prospects Kris Bryant and Jorge Soler were instrumental in the victory. Bryant went three for five with two doubles and a triple, scoring three runs and driving in another while Soler went two for four with a home run, a walk and two RBI. Taylor Lindsey of the Angels, Tyler Collins of the Tigers and Max Muncy of theAthletics each had a pair of hits in the win. Michael Roth got lit up a bit and struggled with his control, going four and a third innings with two runs against on four hits and three walks. Only Richie Mirowski made it through the game without giving up any runs.

On the other side of the diamond, Peoria starting pitcher Kyle Hunter only walked one but still gave up two runs on four hits over three and a third. Only Angel Baez was able to escape the dreaded runs against but he also walked three to go with three strikeouts in an inning and two-thirds. Seattle prospect Patrick Kivlehan went two for four with a home run and two RBI while Phillies prospect Cameron Perkins went two for five with a triple. The Padres’ Cory Spangenberg had a single and a walk to go along wtih two stolen bases and Delino DeShields also stole a pair after taking a walk in the fifth inning.

Game 2

One bad inning caught up to the Glendale Desert Dogs, giving up all four of the Salt River Rafters runs in the sixth inning of a 4-2 loss. Glendale starter Charlie Leesman and his immediate follower A.J. Achter each threw two shutout innings but it all came apart in the sixth when Zack Jones gave up four runs (two were earned) in two-thirds of an inning on one hit and three walks. The Desert Dog Hitters couldn’t do much with the bats, getting only four hits for the entire team. The biggest belt came from Byron Buxton, the Minnesota Twins’ phenom who returned to the lineup after missing the last week of action.

Salt River starter Drew Hutchison registered his second consecutive excellent start, giving up just Buxton’s solo home run and one other hit and striking out four batters over four innings. Fellow Toronto Blue Jay Kenny Wilson led the way on offense with two doubles while Jacob Wilson and Mike Freeman notched the only two RBI for the club.

Game 3

Despite outhitting the Surprise Saguaros, the Scottsdale Scorpions made three errors and fell 3-1 on Friday. Scottsdale starter Vidal Nuno had a great outing, going four shutout innings but reliever Tyler Waldron allowed two runs (one was earned) on three hits in his two innings. Derek Law gave up the final (unearned) run on a pair of walks in the ninth. Mason Williams of the Yankees’ organization had a great game with a pair of singles and a walk while Cory Vaughn from the Mets had a pair of singles as well.

For Surprise, the pitchers were always able to work out of jams with Tim Berry getting the start and scattering three hits for no runs in four innings. Only David Goforth gave up a run, surrendering a pair of hits and a walk in the ninth to hold on for the save. While the Saguaros batters didn’t get as many hits as the Scorpions did, they made them count by hitting for more extra bases. Joe Wendle, a Cleveland prospect, went two for three with a double and a triple while Tyler Naquin had a pair of singles and drove in two runs. Catcher Jorge Alfaro went one for three with a walk and a double and completely shut down the Scottsdale running game by picking off two runners at first base.
