In the most lopsided game of the AFL so far this season, the Salt River Rafters demolished the Peoria Javelinas 20-0 on Saturday. The pitching staff was outstanding, led by Bo Schultz who went five shutout innings and gave up just two hits with five strikeouts. Henry Garcia and Cole White each struck out two in his inning. The whole staff only walked one batter the entire game, showing excellent command. The offensive story involved four home runs, including two (and six RBI) from catcher Dustin Garneau, one from shortstop Nick Ahmed and another from second basemen Cristhian Adames who finished with a four-for-five game and was just a triple short of a cycle with a walk, four runs scored and four RBI. Stephen Piscotty and Richie Shaffer had three hits each (Shaffer included two doubles and two walks) and Andy Burns and Mike Freeman had two hits apiece.
There wasn’t much (good) to tell for Peoria. The whole team only had five hits with Chris Taylor getting two himself. Starter Jason Adam gave up six runs in four innings and the only pitcher to avoid giving up a run was Mike Nesseth.

In a much more reasonable game, the Glendale Desert Dogs beat the Scottsdale Scorpions by a final score of 5-2. Glendale used seven pitchers to combine to give up just two runs on five hits with four walks and eight strikeouts. Jamie Walczak got the start and pitched to just the minimum of six batters over his two innings. Cincinnati’s Travis Mattair had the big game with the bat for the Desert Dogs, getting three hits including a solo home run.
Scottsdale was limited to just five hits but three of them were doubles (off the bats of Aderlin Rodriguez, Cam Maron and Elmer Reyes). Starter Aaron Northcraft gave up two runs over his three innings and Juan Jaime gave up another two in one inning. John Cornely had the best outing striking out two of the three batters he faced.

In the third game of the day, the Surprise Saguaros defeated the Mesa Solar Sox by a score of 6-1. Surprise tallied thirteen hits throughout the game, scoring in bunches in the first and fifth innings. The Saguaros got by with just four pitchers, getting a good start (four innings, three hits, one run, three strikeouts) from Miguel Pena (Boston) and three-strikeout performances from both Tyler Cravy and Shawn Armstrong who each pitched two innings.
Wed Darvill drove home Jorge Soler after they each hit a double in the second inning.
