In Monday’s biggest slug-fest, the Surprise Saguaros came out on top of the Glendale Desert Dogs by a final score of 8-7. It was a real team effort for Surprise getting offense up and down the lineup and contributions from everyone. While Tyler Naquin was the only hitter without a hit, he did drive in a run. Joe Wendle, Henry Urrutia and Jonathan Schoop each had two hits and Texas prospect Ryan Rua hit the team’s only home run. On the pitching side, no one really stood out except for Noe Ramirez who threw two shutout innings (albeit in far from dominant fashion). Starter Eduardo Rodriguez gave up two runs on a pair of hits including a home run and struck out four.

For Glendale, White Sox prospect Marcus Semien went two for five with two home runs and four RBI while Yorman Rodriguez also went deep. None of the pitchers escaped damage except for Miami’s Nick Wittgren who continues his domination this year with another one and a third shutout innings. Alex Meyer got the start and gave up four runs (three earned) over his five innings but struck out six batters.

Starter Matt Heidenreich led the group effort for the Javs, setting tone by throwing three innings with just one hit against and striking out two batters. The offense was led by Seattle’s Chris Taylor who went two for four with two doubles, a stolen base and two RBI while Japhet Amador from the Houston Astros organization went two for four with a double, a run and an RBI.

The Scorpions only managed to get three hits against the strong Peoria pitching with a single from Mason Williams, a double from Tommy La Stella and a triple from Cory Vaughn. In a tight, low-scoring game, the Salt River Rafters defeated the Mesa Solar Sox 3-2 despite two runs for the Solar Sox in the bottom of the eighth. A pair of Blue Jays prospects combined for five and a third shutout innings for the Rafters: Aaron Sanchez got the start and gave up just one hit and three walks while striking out four in four and a third and Marcus Stroman gave up just a hit and nothing else in his one inning of work. Arizona prospect Jake Lamb went three for four with a double while Toronto’s Andy Burns went two for four with an RBI, a run and a stolen base. Catcher Derrick Chung contributed with a base hit and threw out Brian Goodwin stealing second, the only runner trying to pilfer a base on his excellent arm.

For Mesa, Kris Bryant continues to show why he’s probably the best hitter from the 2013 draft with another home run, his fifth for the Arizona League. He drove in both of the Solar Sox’ runs in the process. Starter Tommy Collier was strong, going five scoreless innings giving up just three hits and walking one with one strikeout.
