The Glendale Desert Dogs got the Mesa Solar Sox relievers, scoring all six runs in the eighth and ninth innings to come back and beat Mesa 6-4. Glendale starter Michael Lorenzen gave up three runs in three innings but the back of the bullpen was outstanding, particularly Chris Bassitt and Nick Wittgren. Wittgren, from Miami, earned his second save by striking out all three batters he faced. The batters only had seven hit but the club was efficient, getting a grand slam home run from the Dodgers’ Corey Seager and a two-run blast from the White Sox’ Jared Mitchell who also had a single. Brandon Jacobs had a pair of hits as well including a single and a double.

Blaine Hardy was strong out of the gate for the Solar Sox, throwing three innings with just one hit and two walks against and striking out three batters. The damage came against the Tigers’ Corey Knebel who gave up four runs (three earned) in just two-thirds of an inning in the eighth while Mike Morin finished the eighth but was tagged for a pair of runs in the ninth. Steven Souza Jr. had the best game for the Mesa hitters, going two for four with a single and a double while Kris Bryant had a pair of singles, a walk and stole a base. Taylor Lindsey from the Angels’ organization went deep with a solo shot and added another RBI on a sac fly.

Game 3

Drew Hutchison (Mandatory Credit: Daniel Shirey-US PRESSWIRE)

Salt River starter Drew Hutchison got into trouble early and couldn’t escape, letting the Scottsdale Scorpions get out to a big lead and ultimately win 7-4. Hutchison, who was starting with the Toronto Blue Jays a year and a half ago, got stung by the Scorpions, surrendering six runs on seven hits (including a home run) and a walk in just two innings. Other than Dan Houston, who gave up Scottsdale’s seventh run, the Rafters got some good relief from Mike Montgomery (who struggled with his control at times), Merrill Kelly and Lee Stoppelman. Jake Lamb had a great game for the Rafters, going two for four with a home run and a single, driving in two runs.

Starter Phil Irwin wasn’t fantastic, getting through only two and a third innings but he limited the damage to just one run, as did Matt Benedict who followed with one and two-thirds innings. Yankees prospect Vidal Nuno followed with four innings, giving up two runs (one was earned) and striking out four while Zack Thornton picked up the save with a clean inning. Pittsburgh’s Alen Hanson earned raves from the broadcast crew for both his offense and defense and went three for five with two runs scored, two stolen bases and an RBI. San Francisco’s Andrew Susac went two for three with a home run and three RBI (to go with a pair of walks) while Atlanta second baseman Elmer Reyes had a pair of singles and a walk.
