The Yankees made big headlines on Wednesday by signing Japanese sensation Masahiro Tanaka to a seven-year, $155 million contract.

Not to be outdone, the crosstown Mets are also making headlines. Like this one from the New York Post:

Ike Davis’ dad: Mets ‘screwed up’ trade situation

New York Daily News:

Ike Davis’ father, former Yankees pitcher Ron Davis, says NY Mets ‘screwed up’

HardballTalk:

Ike Davis’ dad thinks the Mets “screwed up” any would-be trade of his son

I think you get the drift. On the same day the Yankees made the splashiest free agent signing of the offseason, all anyone in Metsland can talk about is their “screw up” with Ike Davis.

Ike’s dad Ron Davis took the Mets to task for their inept handling of the situation.

“I think that’s why the Mets have really screwed up in that situation, because they’ve publicly done it so much,” Ron said. “It’s saying to my son, ‘Hey, we don’t want you anymore.’ So I think they backed themselves into a corner saying, ‘We want to trade you, but we want X amount.'”

That is not how you win the media tug-of-war with the Yankees.

To make matters worse for Mets fans, the Yankees have now spent enough money to become a legitimate threat again. Even without Robinson Cano, they’re beginning to look loaded.

Yeah the Mets are probably going to stink this year, but before at least they could look at the Bronx and see equal mediocrity. Now the talent gap between the two New York teams is widening.

Sucks to be a Mets fan right now.
