Cardinals reliever Carlos Martinez is a great lover of pornography. This was no big deal at all until Monday, when the internet realized that Martinez had favorited a bunch of porn images and links on Twitter.

News of Martinez’s racy Twitter favorites spread like a really bad case of the clap but in comical silent movie fast motion. Deadspin gave the already humiliating episode a good old fashioned injection of snark-roids by creating a video compilation of the stuff Martinez had clicked “favorite” on.

The incident became a full blown PR crisis for the Cardinals who quickly apologized.

Manager Mike Matheny addressed the matter. “We’re embarrassed, and he’s embarrassed,” Matheny told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

The Cardinals had one of their IT people show Martinez how to remove the porn from his Twitter. Matheny says Martinez and all other players have to be a lot more careful with what they do on social media.

“Anything that you do right now is one fraction of a second away from being all over the world,” Matheny said. “There has never been a time in history like this. That just heightens our message and heightens our urgency to make sure we are diligent and we are disciplined to educate and make aware that something like this happens it’s going to be an embarrassment to you. Something like this happens it’s going to be an embarrassment to us.”

There’s a very simple rule of thumb that all baseball players and in fact all people should follow when doing anything on Twitter, Facebook or other social media outlets. If you wouldn’t want your grandma to see it, you shouldn’t post it.

Follow that rule and you will be safe. You will not end up like Carlos Martinez, slobbering porn freak.
