Close but no cigar for the People’s Face of MLB Contestant, scrappy Eric Sogard. In the end, the East Coast media elites got their way. A New York guy stands victorious.

After a seemingly interminable process, the Mets’ David Wright has been crowned the Face of MLB.

The contest, which asked Twitter users to choose between contestants pitted against each other in a bracket-style tournament, evolved over the months from an ignorable offseason activity to a vague annoyance to a weirdly compelling showdown.

The final battle between the A’s Eric Sogard and the Mets’ Wright had everything. East Coast vs. West Coast (just like an old-fashioned rap battle), big market vs. small market, jocky vs. nerdy.

Despite a valiant effort by A’s fans and people who generally enjoy voting for underdogs, Sogard was finally vanquished.

Traditional East Coast over hip West Coast. Massive media market over plucky small market. Old-school thick-necked jock over glasses-wearing geek.

I guess some things will never change in baseball. In this world, David Wright will always defeat Eric Sogard. Revenge of the Nerds was wrong.

Well David Wright may be the Face of MLB, but Eric Sogard is the Face of Dreaming Big. He made it all the way to the finals.

It’s just like The Bad News Bears. Yeah they lost in the end, but they learned so much along the way.

Congrats Eric Sogard on showing us what real courage is all about. And congrats Mets fans on your glorious victory. It’s the last thing you’ll win for awhile.
