Carlos Gomez and Gerrit Cole exchanged words during Sunday’s game between the Milwaukee Brewers and Pittsburgh Pirates, resulting in a benches clearing brawl during the game’s third inning that resulted in a trio of ejections. Things seemed to escalate quickly following Gomez’ triple off Cole.

After connecting well on a pitch with a shot to deep center field, Gomez flipped his bat aside and started jogging up the line to first base before breaking into a full spring. Andrew McCutchen had made a play on the ball with a leap at the wall in center, but missed and the ball had caromed back into the field as Gomez rounded the bases. He’d make it into third with relative ease. He’d of likely scored if he’d hustled directly out of the box.

As he collected the ball from Josh Harrison near third base, Cole could be seen mouthing something in Gomez’ direction. The benches cleared quickly once Gomez stepped off third base and started moving towards Cole to respond. Video of the incident shows multiple players involving in pushing and shoving. There were clearly a few punches thrown and at one point Gomez can be seen being taken to the ground.

Gomez was ejected from the game. As were Brewers bench coach Jerry Narron and Pirates outfielder Travis Snider. Additional fines and/or suspensions could end up coming down once the league reviews footage of the full incident.
