Another report in our sporadic minor league recap series!
For the Triple-A Pawtucket Red Sox, Bryce Brentz had three hits including two doubles and a home run. Brentz’s big day at the plate was more than enough offense to back starter Anthony Ranaudo who threw seven shutout innings with five hits and one walk allowed, striking out five. For the Rochester Red Wings (MIN), Alex Meyer struck out seven and didn’t give up a hit in five scoreless innings although he did walk four, earning his second win of the season.
In the Pacific Coast League, teammates Alex Guerrero and Joc Pederson each blasted two home runs for the Albuquerque Isotopes. Pederson was 2/5 with two runs scored and three RBI while Guerrero added a single, scored three times and drove in three. For the Las Vegas 51s (NYM), left fielder Cesar Puello went 3/5 with a home run and a double.
Back in Triple-A after a cup of coffee in the bigs with the St. Louis Cardinals, Memphis Redbirds’ Randal Grichuk continued to mash, hitting two home runs and walking twice for a 2/3 day with three RBI and three runs scored. For the Iowa Cubs, Kyle Hendricks struck out 11 over eight innings of scoreless ball, only allowing three hits and racking up a whopping game score of 87.
In Double-A, Arizona third-base prospect Jake Lamb had a 3/4 day with a pair of doubles for the Mobile Bay Bears in the Southern League.
In the Texas League, Angels’ 2B prospect Alex Yarbrough went 3/5 with six RBI thanks to two home runs. For the San Antonio Missions (SD), catcher Austin Hedges went 2/3 with a double, walk and home run. For the Rangers’ Double-A affiliate, the Frisco RoughRiders, RF Drew Robinson hit a triple, a home run and took a walk while Ryan Rua (3B), was a home run short of the cycle, going 3/6.
In the Eastern League, Mookie Betts is continuing his insanity for the Portland Sea Dogs (BOS), pushing his batting average back up over .400 with a 3/5 game that included three runs, three RBI, his sixth home run of the year, his 20th walk and his 17th stolen base. His teammates Travis Shaw (3/6) and Deven Marrero (2/6, 2B) also had good games.
In the California League, Rockies’ shortstop prospect Trevor Story is continuing an outstanding 2014 campaign in Modesto, hitting .345 thanks to a 3/5 game that featured his third home run of the season. For the Lancaster JetHawks (HOU), Danry Vasquez hit his first home run of the season and added two doubles, going 3/4.
In the Florida State League, Yankees’ 3B prospect Eric Jagielo hit two home runs (giving him nine on the season) for the Tampa Yankees, going 3/5 with five RBI.
