First Hand Reports: Alberto Triunfel & Juremi Profar

Jurickson Profar has begun playing games in Extended Spring Training, his first day was poor but he is still getting back into the swing of things, meanwhile his little brother has looked pretty good.

Juremi Profar does not have the upside of his older brother, in fact his ceiling might not even be as high as Jurickson’s floor, but that doesn’t mean he is not a prospect worth discussing. Juremi has played almost exclusively at third base thus far, as the Texas Rangers have plenty of middle infield talent and Juremi has a bigger body than other Ranger infielders. He began Extended Spring listed at 200 lbs., but apparently is on the Arizona sun diet as the most recent roster I received from the Rangers has him listed at just 185 lbs.

He has good hands and quick reactions at third base, especially when coming in on soft dribblers or bunt attempts. I question whether the arm will be strong enough to stick there, but it is not a poor arm, probably best described as a tick above average.

His swing can be long at times, and he has had some trouble making consistent contact, but I have yet to see him get discouraged at the plate. A cynic might say he doesn’t have the fire needed to be successful, but I have seen him often taking extra grounders and swings on the practice fields when he isn’t in the day’s starting lineup.

There could be some solid power in the bat in time, and his athleticism allow him to be a future utility infielder, but I could also see him eventually being moved to a corner outfield spot.

Alberto Triunfel was signed in the same international class as Rougned Odor, and while Odor is currently in the big leagues, Triunfel is still in Extended Spring Training. His brother, Carlos Triunfel, has gotten a couple cups of coffee with the Seattle Mariners and is now in the Los Angeles Dodgers system.

Alberto has played exclusively at short when I have seen him, and he has very soft hands. His range is a bit limited given he is not all that fast, but he can really pick it with his back hand making the range not a major concern. His arm strength has gotten better since he was originally signed, almost four years ago, so he could very easily stick at short.

He has almost no power in the bat, but he does a solid job of getting the bat to the ball and could hit for a decent average. In the end, a big league future for Triunfel is quite a large question mark, but if he ever does make it up there it will probably be in short stretches as a backup middle infielder that bats in the bottom of a lineup.
