Week in Review: Joey Gallo Enters Texas League with a Bang

I got to see Joey Gallo a lot during Spring Training, and I went on record being very unsure of his future as he looked very poor. He swung and missed too much and didn’t seem all that comfortable at third base, but even when he didn’t make good contact, the ball flew off the bat.

After crushing 21 home runs in 58 games in High-A, he was promoted to the Texas Rangers Double-A club in the Texas League, and has homered in four of his first seven games at the level. In High-A, he was still striking out quite often, but he was drawing a good amount of walks. Now at Double-A, he has struck out 11 time in seven games, but has drawn five walks. I am still not totally sold on him at third base, but with his arm it would be a shame if he ever ends up at first, but his bat is looking like a true difference maker.

The incredible trio of pitchers for Colorado Rockies affiliate is now shy a pitcher, Eddie Butler has been called up to the big leagues and has already found himself on the DL, but Daniel Winkler and Jon Gray are still with the Tulsa Drillers. All three pitchers have recently been named to the Texas League All-Star team, but Winkler has also found himself on the Double-A DL.

With Preston Tucker recently getting a promotion to Triple-A, the home run leader still in the Texas League is James Ramsey, who is also slated to start in the outfield in the Texas League All-Star Game. Ramsey has hit just one home run in six games since returning from injury that saw him not see any time in the field from May 17th through June 9th.

The Frisco Rough Riders and Tulsa Drillers both hold strong leads in their given divisions, and both have arguably the most prospect talent of any team in the league.
