Carlos Correa Out for Season

The top overall pick in the 2012 MLB draft, and the Houston Astros top prospect, will not play any more baseball this season.

Carlos Correa suffered was a consensus top 30 prospect in all of baseball heading into last season, and ranked in the top ten at all the major sites heading into this season, left his California League team earlier this week to see the Houston Astros team doctor. The news was not good as he underwent season ending surgery on Wednesday to repair a fractured fibula near his ankle.

Correa is just 19 years old and had posted a triple slash line of .325/.416/.510 with the Lancaster Jethawks along with six home runs and 20 stolen bases.

Correa is not the top prospect from his draft class, as Byron Buxton holds that distinction as he is currently ranked the top prospect in all of baseball, but Correa was certainly an excellent pick by the Astros. He will likely stick at shortstop despite being 6’4” and could be a very good hitter in the big leagues. Even if he is eventually moved off short, he has a very strong arm and real power potential that could make him one of the best third basemen in the league in time.

There is still hope Correa can recover in time to participate in the Arizona Fall League in October or November, according to the Houston Chronicle.
