Three pieces that could be on the trade block

1. SP Jon Lester

Putting Lester on the trade block depends on multiple factors, but it is entirely possible. Right now, it appears that the Red Sox will let Lester hit the open market this offseason. If they continue to fall out of contention, then they should field offers for Lester given the fact that he would bring a good haul in return. Pride from the Sox could keep him off the market, and the Red Sox could very well find themselves right back in contention in a still wide-open AL East. But, if the Sox don’t expect to work out an extension with Lester and if they are still far back in the division in a couple of weeks, Lester could be dealt.

2. C A.J. Pierzynski

Pierzynski has put up an underwhelming .257/.290/.355 line this season, but could still be an upgrade to many teams. He also brings big game experience to the table, having won the World Series with the Chicago White Sox in 2005. Like Lester he is a free agent after the season, so if the Red Sox are out of contention as the deadline nears he could be on the block.

3. RP Burke Badenhop

Badenhop has been outstanding this year, putting up a 1.62 ERA as a middle reliever. But just like Pierzynski and Lester, he is a free agent after the season, and the Red Sox will look to cash in on him if they fall out of contention. Rental relievers don’t bring a huge return, but Badenhop should bring something of good value back after he has been so good this year.
