A Forfeit in the Pacific Coast League
Forfeits are not something we see very often in professional sports, especially when it comes as a result of a top prospect playing in a game. In the bottom of the first inning of the July 9th matchup between the Albuquerque Isotopes and El Paso Chihuahuas, the game was suspended due to weather and resumed the next day. The Isotopes wound up winning 7-6 on the scoreboard, but it goes as a loss in the record books. The starting center fielder for the game, and number two hitter in the lineup, was Joc Pederson, who had just been removed from the disabled list. Pederson gave the club 26 active players since they did not officially remove anyone from the roster before first pitch.
Officially, the game goes into the books as a 9-0 win for El Paso, but all the stats except pitching outcomes count. So there was no winning or losing pitcher, but Jamie Romak and Tim Federowicz each hit home runs for a team that did not officially score any runs.
In games that actually counted, the Omaha Storm Chasers won three games to head into the All-Star break with the longest winning streak and a half game lead in the American Northern Division. Sacramento and Las Vegas are tied for the most wins in the league, each go into the break with 56 wins.
Member of the Las Vegas club, Allan Dykstra, won the Triple-A home run derby, but the All-Stars from the Pacific Coast League fell to the International League squad 7-3.
In the week before the break, Arquimedes Caminero let his big fastball shine in 5.1 innings over four games, recording three saves, striking out seven, and earning the leagues Pitcher of the Week honors. His New Orleans teammate and fellow frequent traveler between Miami and the PCL, Jake Marisnick, took home the Offensive Player of the Week honors thanks to a week in which he hit better than .400, slugged .750, and clubbed two home runs.
Break out power hitting Adam Duval still has just three home runs since his demotion back to Triple-A, but his 26 are still eight more than anyone else in the league.
