Not all the trades leading up to the deadline will be big names, in fact, they may not even all be big league guys. The Oakland Athletics have acquired the 11th overall pick in the 2010 draft, Deck McGuire, for cash considerations, per multiple sources.
The 6’6” 220 lbs. right hander will join an impressive Triple-A pitching staff in Sacramento that includes Tommy Milone, Josh Lindblom, Drew Pomeranz, and Philip Humber.

In McGuire’s first year in pro ball, he made it all the way to Double-A and put in 125 innings while striking out 124 with a 3.02 ERA, he has struggled ever since. He spent all of 2012 and 2013 in Double-A New Hampshire putting up ERAs of 5.88 and 4.86. This year he finally put things together in his fourth attempt at Double-A with a 2.98 ERA in 10 starts, but has struggled since moving up to Triple-A, with an ERA of 5.86.
The once highly touted prospect is now merely an organizational depth guy, but with the lack of prospects in the A’s system, he might crack some top 30 lists this off-season, if you still consider a player going into his age 26 season a prospect.
He has a low 90s fastball and decent enough change, but his curve is pretty much just a show-me pitch. If he does make the jump to the big leagues anytime soon, especially for a team with the pitching depth of the A’s, I would guess it be in a mid-relief role despite only making three relief appearances thus far in his minor league career.
