Dustin Pedroia, 2B, Boston Red Sox

Midseaon Boston Red Sox second baseman Dustin Pedroia fell on his left hand and has been playing with the injury ever since. He sat out Tuesday’s game.  Red Sox manager John Farrell explained the injury,

"“He applied a tag, or actually it was completing a double play,” Farrell said. “That’s when it was first irritated. In Pedroia fashion, he was never going to let that deter him or take him out of the lineup. As the symptoms haven’t dissipated or only recently gotten a little bit more severe, that’s where we are."

Part of the problem is that Pedroia had surgery over the off season to repair a torn ulnar collateral ligament in the same hand. He recovered fully but it is still affecting his swing somewhat especially now due to the more recent injury.

Pedroia, who played Monday night through quite a bit of pain, underwent an MRI after the game. The MRI revealed that the inflammation has increased to the point that Pedroia may not play again in 2014. Manager John Farrell said Tueday,

"“It’s been a little while. And yet, he’s been banged up a little bit and being able to manage it to a certain extent while still playing,” Farrell told the press. “As it continues to worsen a little bit, we backed him off. I wouldn’t rule out shutting him down, but it’s too premature to make a final decision on that right now.”"
