Houston Astros receive permission to talk to Phil Nevin about managerial opening

If you’re wondering if Phil Nevin owns any managerial experience, he does. It’s just not at the major league level.

For the 2010 season, Nevin was the skipper for the Erie Seawolves. He guided the Double-A affiliate of Detroit Tigers the to a 66-76 record. From 2011-2013, Nevin was the manager for the Toledo Mud Hens of the International League. His record in those three season was 191-238. The Mud Hens are also an affiliate of the Detroit Tigers.

This past season, Nevin served as the manager for the Reno Aces, the Diamondbacks’ Triple-A affiliate in the Pacific Coast League. The Aces finished the season with a record of 81-63, tied for best record in the league. The Aces were eliminated from the PCL postseason by the Omaha Storm Chasers in the fifth and final game of the series.

Nevin was the #1 overall selection in the 1992 draft. The team that selected him: the Houston Astros. Although Nevin never played for an extended period of time with the Astros, he did achieve moderate success as a member of the Detroit Tigers and San Diego Padres. A career .270 hitter, Nevin made the National League All-Star team in 2001 when he was in San Diego.

And do not overlook Nevin as a candidate for Arizona should Kirk Gibson get the boot. Nevin has only spent one year in the organization, but it was a profitable one.
