Michael Kohn, Tampa Bay Rays reach agreement on one year deal
Right-hander Michael Kohn has reached an agreement with the Tampa Bay Rays on a one year deal for the 2015 season, according to a release by the club. Kohn was able to get an early jump on the upcoming free agent season after being outrighted by the Los Angeles Angels in late September, choosing free agency instead of accept an assignment to Triple-A.
Signing Kohn leaves the Rays’ 40-man roster at capacity and represents the first move under Matthew Silverman’s regime. He earned just $515,000 this past season. Terms of the deal with Tampa Bay were not disclosed.
Kohn has split four of the past five seasons between the Angels’ bullpen and the minor leagues. The results – regardless of level – have been a mixed bag. In 126 appearances with the Angels (110.1 IP) he’s posted a 3.67 ERA and 1.423 WHIP. Kohn has benefited from a 1.1 HR/9 rate and strong strikeout numbers, 8.7 K/9. His command issues have been prominent, however, as he’s also permitted 6.0 BB/9.
Even in his minor league career, the walks have been a concern for the now 28 year old. In 221.2 IP he’s permitted 4.4 BB/9 (5.0 BB/9 at Triple-A) while striking out 12.5/9.
Tampa Bay has historically had success taking chances on relievers with strong strikeout numbers, though many have brought a little more experience to the mix than what Kohn has under his belt. The Rays benefited from having a solid core at the back of their bullpen this past season – notably between Brad Boxberger and Jake McGee – that will still be under contract heading into next season. If Kohn is able to reign in some of his control concerns, cutting down that walk rate, he could prove to be an under the radar acquisition that helps bridge the gap to their late-game options.
