When looking at prospects, there is no “sure thing” but there certainly are guys that are close to it. Oscar Taveras was one of those guys, but his big league career will end with just 80 games played.
His big league career now also seems inconsequential in the big picture now as, the player many St. Louis Cardinals fans anticipated being the cornerstone of the franchise for the next decade, was tragically killed in a car accident in his native Dominican Republic on Sunday.
Investigators in the Dominican Republic belief heavy rainfall in the area may have contributed to the crash, but they have not yet determined the exact cause.
Tavares was considered to be one of the top three prospects in baseball each of the past two seasons, and was a key bat off the bench for the Cardinals in the playoffs this season.
There is no good way to sum up how tragic it is to lose such a talented 22-year old ballplayer, but many players, teammates, friends, and media outlets showed their respects over twitter, which sums it up better than I can:
Just a couple of days ago we were joking and laughing... I'll keep you in my heart Bro. Dios te Bendiga Oscar! pic.twitter.com/DfJJL5GV9l

Juan Perez was having a difficult time talking with reporters after Game 5 about his friend and winter ball teammate, Oscar Taveras.

Let us all learned from what happened to #Oscartaveras and understand we are all vulnerable. Discipline, prudence, let's love life and God.

RIP Oscar Taveras. Really puts into prospective how short life is & we should enjoy every moment of it as he had his whole life ahead of him
