The Los Angeles Dodgers are “aggressively pursuing” a trade for Chicago White Sox shortstop Alexei Ramirez, according to Bob Nightengale of USA Today.
Multiple teams have been linked to Ramirez already this offseason – including the New York Yankees, New York Mets, and the Dodgers. Shortstop is a position of need for each organization and an important piece towards getting each into contention in the coming seasons. The Yankees are looking for someone to replace Derek Jeter. Rumors seem to suggest that Hanley Ramirez is unlikely to return to the Dodgers, leaving them with a need as well.
Ramirez is owed $10 million for the coming season and his contract contains a club option for 2016 at the same amount. The Cuban native is 33 years old, has a strong arm, and great defensive ability. Despite his age, he’s been a vital member of the White Sox’s infield and produces some pop at the plate – winning his second Silver Slugger Award this past season.
The shortstop played in 158 games for the White Sox in 2014, hitting .273 with 15 home runs and 74 RBI. He also was a reserve for this past summer’s All Star Game.
The White Sox are believe to be open to moving Ramirez, even though it could mean a step back at the position for the coming season. Long term the team hopes that Tim Anderson will be able to develop into the role, but he is not yet MLB-ready.
