We have heard a lot about the New York Mets farm hands this season. Their young pitching staff is anchored by Noah Syndergaard. Kevin Plawecki is behind the plate and Steven Matz’s Major League debut seems imminent.

The Mets are also stacked with some big names that are not yet currently on the big league roster. Michael Conforto for example has been making big noise since being drafted 10th overall last June as he has already risen to Double-A. So has Wuilmer Becerra.
Becerra was the third piece in the prospect puzzle acquired in the R.A. Dickey trade with the Blue Jays that could change the course of Mets’ recent history. As already mentioned, Syndergaard has made it. Travis d’Arnaud, despite being on the DL, is the Mets catcher of tomorrow. Now, Becerra is making some noise.
The 20-year old right fielder took home the South Atlantic League Player of the Week Award for the first week of June behind a huge week. Becerra went 12-for-28 on the week over 7 games with 8 extra base hits and 7 RBI. He slashed .429/.467/.857 as the Savannah Sand Gnats finished the week with six straight wins behind Becerra’s big bat.
Becerra’s week consisted of four multi-hit games and two home runs. He saw his batting average rise from .269 to .292. It is his first season above Rookie level and he is a mere five games off his career high of games played in a single season. His two home runs this week gave him 7 on the year, tying his career high set last season with the Kingsport Mets in 58 games.

Becerra won’t be replacing anyone in Queens in the near future, but the Mets outfield does have some aging veterans in the corners. The Mets 27-rated prospect has a ways to go with just 53 games over Rookie level, but Michael Cuddyer and Curtis Grandson aren’t going anywhere just yet.
The Mets are currently ranked second in baseball with 11 players from their farm system on their roster. The past few years, while some questionable signings have been made on the big league level, their is no denying that the Mets have built for the future via the draft and some big name trades.
Should Becerra his and be in a Mets uniform within the next two years, the Dickey trade with the Blue Jays could go down as a franchise changer. Unfortunately for Toronto, it won’t be North of the border.
Joining Becerra in Class A Player of the Week Awards are:
California League: A.J. Reed
Carolina League: Nellie Rodriguez
Florida State League: Tyler Hanover
Midwest League: Trent Gilbert
