Who wants a $16,050,000 outfielder in 2016 that has not been suitable for everyday play since 2012? Going once… It looks like the (probably) superstitious move to change his name before the season started is not paying off. Melvin Upton has not hit over .208 since 2012 and he’s currently piddling along at a .211/.291/.366 clip.

It’s stunning that the Braves were able to deal him before the season started. Basically though, Atlanta told San Diego that if they want Craig Kimbrel, they have to take on the baggage of Upton (once more reuniting him with brother Justin). It’s one of many reasons the Padres are a miserable team in 2015. Going the other way in that deal to clear room for their starting set of new outfielders was Cameron Maybin, who at 28, is finally experiencing his breakout campaign.

Maybin is very tradable to a team looking to buy at the deadline, with his .283-8-44 line with 16 steals and the ability to play center field. He’s set to make $8 million in 2016 with a team option and one million dollar team buyout in 2017. Once Justin leaves San Diego at the trade deadline or via free agency before the 2016 season, the Padres will be stuck with the older Melvin making Mike Trout money in 2016 on their bench.
