Kansas City Royals interested in Martin Prado

The Kansas City Royals made headlines on Sunday by acquiring Reds ace Johnny Cueto for a trio of left-handed pitchers. But reports immediately surfaced following the trade that Kansas City was likely not finished, and further reports now back up that claim.

Jon Morosi of FOX Sports reports that the Royals are interested in acquiring infielder Martin Prado. The versatile infielder appeals to Kansas City as a potential replacement for struggling second baseman Omar Infante, and his versatility could also allow him to spell Alex Gordon in left field while the All-Star recovers from a groin injury.

Prado is hitting .277 with 14 doubles and four home runs for the Marlins this season, and could be a more difficult trade target to acquire since he’s under club control through 2016. With Miami suffering hard form the injury bug this year, they could be less inclined to move their starting third baseman with hopes that he will contribute to a healthy and competing Marlins club next year. The right package, however, could certainly land the Royals the 31-year-old, though Miami would likely have to cover some of the $11-million per year Prado is set to make through next season.

With Brandon Finnegan, John Lamb and Cody Reed all gone to Cincinnati, Kansas City now has slimmer pickings to choose from in their farm system, but still has a deep group of prospects to deal from should they elect to make more moves prior to the deadline. If a deal for Prado doesn’t come, they could elect to target another pitcher, a second baseman or an outfield bat to fill in for Gordon or replace the struggling Alex Rios in right.
