It was reported last night that the Oakland Athletics were closing in on a deal to trade closer Tyler Clippard, though a specific suitor wasn’t identified at the time. The New York Mets appear to be that suitor.
FOX Sports’ Ken Rosenthal reports that the Mets are “making progress” on a deal for Clippard, while other reports have the Nationals still in the mix and other clubs keeping in touch with the Athletics. It was previously reported that the Mets would be willing to send pitcher Rafael Montero to Oakland in a deal for Ben Zobrist, though Zobrist appears not to be in these discussions. But with the way deals work at the trade deadline, it’s also not out of the question to think a bigger deal for both players could be in the works or come together later on.
Whether it’s to the Mets, Nationals or some other club, it appears that Clippard will be the next member of the A’s to be shipped out this week. And it seems that’s going to come sooner rather than later.
