Per CSN Bay Area’s Alex Pavlovic, the San Francisco Giants have designated Joaquin Arias for assignment. The move clears a 40-man roster spot for outfielder Nori Aoki, who was activated on Monday.

Most famous for being the player-to-be-named later in the Alex Rodriguez trade between the Yankees and Rangers, Arias has struggled to an unimpressive .207 in 58 at-bats in 2015. The middle infielder got his career back on track after joining the Giants, hitting .270 over 544 combined at-bats from 2012-2013 with six homers, 24 doubles and 53 RBIs. Arias’ numbers have been on the decline ever since, as he hit .254 in 193 at-bats last year and, as previously mentioned, posted a lowly .207 in minimal action this year.
While his offensive numbers were underwhelming, Arias was a slightly-above average defender, posting a 0.3 dWAR. Arias has over 100 career games at third base, shortstop and second base, and has also seen time at first base and the outfield. His defensive versatility could make Arias an interesting option for clubs who’ve battled the injury bug this year, with the Nationals jumping out as a club who could be interested in adding the 30-year-old for depth purposes.
If Arias passes through waivers, he’ll have the right to elect free agency rather than accept an outright assignment. Because of his struggles at the plate, however, it will be interesting to see what Arias does if put in that position.
