It appeared this morning that Mat Latos and Michael Morse of the Miami Marlins (my goodness that’s a mouthful) were set to be shipped out to Los Angeles, but medical concerns have put the trade on hold. It remains unclear which player the medical concern is over, though Latos had reportedly been told already that he was being traded to L.A.
The Dodgers are also reportedly looking for a third team to get involved in the deal and take Morse, who still has another $8.5-million on his contract next season. With Yasiel Puig, Joc Pederson, Andre Ethier, Carl Crawford, Scott Van Slyke and Alex Guerrero already in the fold in the outfield, there’s no apparent need for Morse in Los Angeles. It appears that taking his contract is merely part of the Dodgers’ attempt to get Latos.
While the potential return to Miami is still unclear, the only player that’s been mentioned to this point is pitcher Jeff Brigham. A fourth-round pick by L.A. in the 2014 draft, the 23-year-old has struggled to a 5.96 ERA in 68.0 innings at High-A Rancho Cucamonga. He did, however, thrive in two appearances at A-level Great Lakes this year, striking out 11 batters in 7.0 innings and going 2-0 with 1.29 ERA.
