Pittsburgh Pirates acquire Joe Blanton from Royals for cash
The Pittsburgh Pirates announced on Wednesday night that they’ve acquired pitcher Joe Blanton from the Kansas City Royals for cash considerations.
The Royals designated Blanton for assignment on Tuesday to make space for the newly-acquired Johnny Cueto, and he figured to find a new home before clearing waivers thanks to more-than-serviceable numbers in 2015. Blanton had a 3.89 ERA in 41.2 innings (15 appearances, four starts) for the Royals this season, and proved to be effective both as a reliever and a spot starter. He’ll likely find a home in the bullpen in Pittsburgh, though could ultimately see a start or two if the Pirates deem Charlie Morton‘s inconsistency to be unbearable.
