New York Yankees to promote Luis Severino

Heading into the 2015 season, Luis Severino had established himself as not just one of the New York Yankees top prospects, but one of the top prospects in all of baseball. A consensus top 100 prospect, Severino was essentially untouchable so far as the Yankees were concerned, a drastic departure from what the expected mindset i nthe Bronx would be.

While the Yankees may not have been able to pry away pitchers like Johnny Cueto or David Price away to fortify their starting rotation, that does not necessitate that help will not be forthcoming. In fact, that help may be in the form of Severino himself, who is reportedly going to make his Bronx debut in short order.

Based on his performance this season, it would appear as though the 21 year old Severino has done all that could be expected of him. Overall in 2015, Severino has posted a 9-2 record with a 2.45 ERA and a 0.997 WHiP, striking out 98 batters against 27 walks in only 99.1 innings. He has been even better with the Scranton-Wilkes Barre RailRiders, posting a 7-0 record with 1.91 ERA and a 0.929 WHiP in 61.1 innings.

It is easy to find numbers that point to Sevrino’s dominance at the AAA level. In his eleven starts, Severino has only allowed three earned runs in a game once. In his last outing, Severino gave up three unearned runs, but he was truly victimized by his defense, as he allowed only one hit, striking out ten in six innings.

Currently, the New York Yankees rank 23rd in baseball with a 4.36 ERA from their starting rotation. Considering the improvements made by the Toronto Blue Jays, that six game divisional lead may not be as safe as one would think. Given the status of the Yankees rotation, help is seemingly needed.

One of those reinforcements is on the way. Luis Severino, even at his young age, may not have anything left to prove at the minor league level. Now, he will reportedly get his chance to prove that he is worth that untouchable label for the Yankees.
