The Los Angeles Dodgers have called up top prospect Jose Peraza, who was acquired from the Braves in last month’s three-team deal with Atlanta and the Miami Marlins. Peraza will get the start at second base for Los Angeles Monday.

The move gives the Dodgers a replacement for Howie Kendrick, who strained his hamstring in L.A.’s loss to the Dodgers on Sunday. While the Dodgers also have a more-than-capable Enrique Hernandez in the fold in the middle infield, he figures to see time at shortstop with incumbent Jimmy Rollins struggling to a .222 mark on the year.
Peraza makes his big-league debut coming off a hot 10-game streak with the Dodgers’ AAA affiliate, in which he hit .385 with a homer, three doubles, two walks and an outstanding 1.004 OPS. He previously hit .294 with 26 stolen bases, 115 hits and seven triples in 94 games with the Braves’ top minor league affiliate.
Peraza’s big-league stay will likely depend largely on the health of Kendrick, who is headed for a stint on the disabled list. Should Kendrick’s injury put him out until rosters expand on September 1st, one would think Peraza would be a lock to stick with the big-league club through the end of the season. While he’ll likely be called up at the start of the month regardless, he could be sent down momentarily due to roster constraints if Kendrick returns sometime in August.
