Houston Astros designate Jake Buchanan for assignment
The Houston Astros have designated pitcher Jake Buchanan for assignment, per the Houston Chronicle’s Evan Drellich. The move clears space for the club to add September call-up Joe Thatcher to the 40-man roster.
Buchanan could be an interesting waiver candidate for teams looking for pitching depth, as he’s shown some success in the high minors and also in brief stints in the majors. The 25-year-old made saw his first big-league action last year, making two starts and 17 total appearances for Houston. While he was inconsistent, Buchanan showed enough promise that he’ll likely garner interest on the waiver wire and could opt for free agency if he goes unclaimed over the next few days.
Any club that claimed the right-hander would have club control though the 2020 season.
