Tampa Bay Rays affiliate Wins FSL Crown in Walk-Off Fashion

The Charlotte Stone Crabs took home the Florida State League title on a walk-off walk.

Charlotte second baseman Kean Wong drew a bases-loaded walk with two outs in the bottom of the 13th inning as the Stone Crabs, the Tampa Bay Rays’ High-A affiliate, beat the Daytona Tortugas 3-2 in Game 4 of the FSL Championship Series.

The game was decided well after the game’s two best pitchers were done for the evening. Reds No. 3 prospect and FSL Pitcher of the Year Amir Garrett pitched six innings and allowed two runs on four hits and seven strikeouts, while Rays No. 3 prospect Brent Honeywell also went six innings and allowed two runs, one earned, on three hits and six strikeouts.

In the bottom of the 13th inning, Charlotte designated hitter Maxx Tissenbaum singled to left after a groundout. After another single and a walk loaded the bases, Wong came to the plate and got the winning RBI.

Charlotte third baseman Hector Guevara was 2-for-6 with two doubles. He also scored a run in the bottom of the first inning on a sac fly from Rays No. 10 prospect first baseman Casey Gillaspie. Centerfielder Braxton Lee also had two hits and scored a run.

Tortuga first baseman Chad Wallach was 1-for-5 with a double and drove in both runs for Daytona. He drove in second baseman Ty Washington with an RBI-groundout to shortstop in the top of third inning and again drove in Washington with a double in the top of the fifth inning.

Charlotte came into the series despite a 24-41 record in the second half of the season. The Stone Crabs won the FSL South Division in the first half of the season, which made them eligible for the postseason.

The Stone Crabs swept their way to the Championship Series with a 2-0 series win over the Palm Beach Cardinals. Daytona swept the Clearwater Threshers in its semifinal matchup.
