Los Angeles Angels designate Grant Green for assignment
The Los Angeles Angels designated infielder Grant Green for assignment on Wednesday, calling up pitcher Jo-Jo Reyes in a corresponding roster move.
The move likely signifies the end of the road for Green as an Angel, as he’ll either be claimed on waivers or outrighted to the minors once the waiver process is complete. Green qualifies to be a minor league free agent this winter, so with all respective minor league seasons over, he would be done with the Angels even if he were to accept an outright assignment for some reason.

Green was acquired by the Angels in a trade that sent Alberto Callaspo to the Oakland Athletics in 2013, and it seemed at the time that Los Angeles was acquiring a potential infield cornerstone for years to come. Green was largely considered to be amongst the game’s Top 100 prospects at the time, though he’s struggled to a .263 clip in his time with the Angels and also has poor defensive metrics at all four positions (second base, shortstop, first base and left field) he’s played in a Los Angeles uniform.
The former first-round pick is still 28, and hit a much more impressive .308 in 93 games with the Angels’ AAA affiliate this season, so there’s reason to believe he’ll have an easy time finding a new home as a free agent. While he may not be signing any seven-figure contracts this winter, Green should still manage to secure a big-league invite from a team and have a chance to earn a roster spot as a utility player.
