Boston Red Sox to bring back John Farrell, Torey Lovullo in 2016
The Boston Red Sox announced on Saturday that John Farrell will return to the dugout as the team’s manager in 2016. The press release also indicated that Farrell has completed his chemotherapy treatments, which in the grand scheme of things is perhaps the much bigger news.

Farrell stepped away from the dugout earlier this season upon being diagnosed with his cancer, and bench coach Torey Lovullo stepped in to fill his place. The Red Sox have gone on to be one of the hottest teams in the second half under Lovullo, which raised some questions as to whether he may ultimately replace Farrell full-time next season or look for managerial openings elsewhere.
But the release also announced that Lovullo has signed a two-year extension to continue serving as bench coach under Farrell, and has waived the right to pursue managerial openings with other clubs this winter. The duo figures to lead a very different-looking Boston club next season, as a completely restructured front office led by Dan Dombrowski expects to shake things up quite a bit. The Red Sox have gone 218-220 in three seasons under Farrell, and won the 2013 World Series in his first season as Boston skipper after coming over from Toronto.
